The cousin of the Gabonese president intercepted in Paris with more than a billion FCFA
She was reportedly intercepted at Charles de Gaulle airport while returning from Gabon
The director of the National Social Security Fund (Cnss) of Gabon was intercepted last Friday 1 February at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris with the equivalent of 1 300 000 000 million (one billion three hundred million) of F CFA while returning from Gabon.
A new financial scandal has plagued the 50-year-old Bongo clan in Gabon. One of her family members, Nicole Assélé, CEO of the National Social Security Fund (Cnss) and cousin of the dictator Ali Bongo, was arrested last Friday at the Charles de Gaulles airport in Paris, France, in possession of a sum of 2,000,000 million euros, or 1,300,000,000 CFA francs.
According to a diplomatic source, the money was hidden in bags that were part of the baggage of the director general of the Cnss. It was at the moment of entering French territory that the scabrous discovery was made by the French Customs, assisted in this task by sniffer dogs.
Given the importance of the sum discovered, reported the source, Nicole Assélé was later heard by the police. It alleged that the sum of money found in his possession was intended for the funeral of Pierre Edouard-Valentin, father-in-law of the Gabonese dictator, buried Saturday in Montpellier, southern France.
The discovery made by the French customs highlights the embezzlement of funds orchestrated regularly by the cousin of Ali Bongo
But this version would not have convinced the French authorities at all. An inquiry was opened to unravel the threads of the skein. A head of the general management of the Cnss in Libreville told Matin of Africa that on the eve of her trip to France, Nicole Assélé collected all the revenue from the medical structures under her administration.
Anything that gives credibility to the thesis of misappropriation of public funds. The scabreuse made by the French police did not surprise the agents of the Cnss. In the light of their explanations, it appears that Nicole Assélé manages this parapublic company as a family grocery store, putting the grapple on the operating budget and the revenue generated by the medical structures under its tutelage.
Moreover, nothing goes more in the National Social Security Fund. Since the appointment on August 25, 2017, of the cousin of Ali Bongo at the head of this entity, it falls from Charybdis in Scylla. Dame Assélé would excel in mismanagement, arrogance and infamy to the detriment of the obvious will of a whole staff who, through intermittent strikes, continues to demand financial orthodoxy and the preservation of the gains
