AMBAZONIAN WAR OF RESTAURATION: MORE THAN 75 CIVILIANS KILLED SINCE AMBA FORCES AND GOVERNMENT STARTED FIGHTING
Ambazonian : more than 75 civilians killed since fighting began
At least 23 gendarmes and Cameroonian policemen have been killed in the last three months”There is an escalation of violence” in Cameroon’s predominantly English-speaking areas of the country.
The crisis has lasted for over a year in these English-speaking areas. The claims, initially of a social nature, have become political and some groups are now favoring armed actions.
According to the International Crisis Group, at least 23 policemen and Cameroonians have been killed in the last three months and 75 civilians killed by security forces since last September. For Hans de Marie Heungoup, researcher at International Crisis Group, an insurrection has been trying to gain a foothold for three months.
“This insurgency hinges for the moment around self-defense groups. There are more than a dozen present in both regions, but also two or three major militias, in particular the Ambazonia Defense Forces (ADF) and the Southern Cameroon Defense Forces (SCDF). There are two with different acronyms. These are the main militias, which, together with the vigilante groups, organize low-level attacks against military posts, gendarmerie stations and police stations. ”
It is difficult to know exactly how many fighters there are in each of these militias or self-defense groups “but within the different militias it would be around one hundred combatants. And (…) most other self-defense groups have between 10 and 30 active members or combatants, “says the researcher.
According to ICG, these groups use small arms like traditional rifles or grenades for some. But they do not have heavy weaponry.
